Hurricane Katrina, the Department of Health and Human Services has
established a Web site
https://volunteer.ccrf.hhs.gov
https://volunteer.ccrf.hhs.gov and toll-free number (1-866
-KAT MEDI) to identify healthcare professionals to assist in relief
efforts. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to visit the
Web site and register to volunteer for appointment by HHS.
The areas of expertise that are particularly needed
include: RNs, LPNs, Nursing Assistants/Nursing Support, Nursing
Staff Directors, Patient Transporters/Volunteers, Physician's
Assistants or Nurse Practitioners, and Respiratory Therapists.
ARN extends its sympathy and support to all those affected by this
disaster, both the victims of the hurricane and its aftermath and
those who are enduring great hardships to assist in relief efforts.

President's Message
I hope everyone is having a great summer. Don't delay in registering for
this year's Sept conference on the Virginia Jewel. Once again Cindi
Gordon-Wilson and team have put together an excellent
educational/networking program. She has even ordered a sunny warm day
with no clouds!
The VARN Board of Directors held our annual summer meeting in July. We
are planning several educational events for the upcoming year. How would
you like to become a member of the VARN board? We are always looking for
new members with fresh and innovative ideas. If you may be interested,
take a look at our VARN website for board contact information. Get in
touch with someone from your area and join us for our next board
meeting.
Check out the VARN website at
www.gizwebs.com/varn. There you will find the contact information,
upcoming educational opportunities, current library listing, download
scholarship requests and review our upcoming VARN educational agendas.
Speaking of upcoming agendas, plan to spend April 4th, 2008 in Richmond,
with Dr. Banja and VARN. Dr. John Banja is a clinical ethicist at the
Center for Ethics and an associate professor of rehabilitation medicine
at Emory University in Atlanta. In addition to teaching and doing
research on medical ethics, he has presented over 600 invited lectures
to health professionals and has published over 100 articles and book
chapters. We are thrilled to have Dr. Banja spend the day with us again.
I hope you will be able to attend the Oct. ARN annual educational
conference in Washington D.C. We are very lucky to have this year's
meeting within a day's drive. Scholarships are available to VARN
members. The guidelines and forms can be found on our website. Register
now for the conference and save an additional $100. The early bird
discount ends August 30th.
Free nursing contact hours are now available through the Members Only
section of the ARN Web site. Certificates can be printed online after
completing the posttest. Be sure to take advantage of these free CEUs
that are offered twice a year, February and August.
I hope to see you at one or all of the upcoming events. If you are
interested in hosting or coordinating a meeting in the state please
contact the board.
Thank-you,
Wendi Harris,
President VARN
