Promoting Environmentally
Healthy Workplaces
More and more businesses are
working to adopt environmentally responsible practices, and
hospitals are no different. Many of Virginia's hospitals are members
of Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E), a national movement
for environmental sustainability in health care. Virginia Nurses
Association (VNA) is proud to have joined with the Virginia
Hospitals and Healthcare Association to support these environmental
initiatives.
To further support nurses in this environmentally conscious era, the
VNA is offering an environmental health workshop, Promoting
Environmentally Health Workplaces: Virginia's Nurses in Action,
Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the VCU School of Nursing, Richmond, VA.
We'll be joined by nationally recognized speakers such as Barbara
Sattler, RN, PhD, FAAN, Professor, University of Maryland School of
Nursing and Anna Gilmore Hall, RN, Executive Director, Health Care
Without Harm.
Participants will learn strategies for implementing environmentally
responsible practices ranging from eliminating mercury, to reducing
the quantity and toxicity of health care waste, to minimizing use
and exposure to hazardous chemicals and toxic substances for both
nurses and patients. This interactive workshop will be begin at 8:00
and conclude by 3:00 pm and continuing education credit will be
awarded. The fee for attending this workshop is only $10, and a
continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Space is limited
to 50 participants so register today at:
www.virginianurses.com.
(Look in the Upcoming Events section.)
This workshop is the kick-off event in establishing VNA's
Environmental Health Taskforce. So in addition to attending the
workshop, I hope your organization will consider becoming a member
of VNA's newly established Environmental Health Task Force to
develop nursing's strategic agenda for reducing environmental
hazards (such as mercury, DEHP and PVD) in our workplaces and making
hospitals healthier healing environments.
Join nationally recognized
speakers as they discuss environmentally responsible practices in
hospitals and healthcare environments.
